Auto Safety Tips

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

What to do if you are involved in an automobile accident:

  • Stop and identify yourself.
  • Notify the police right away.
  • Take note of the name, address, phone number and insurance company of the driver of the other vehicle.
  • Take note of the make and model of the other vehicles involved as well as the license plate number and where any damage occurred on either vehicle.
  • Do not discuss the accident with anyone other than police and an authorized person from your insurance company.
  • Notify your insurance company immediately.

Cold Weather Driving Tips:

  • Have your battery serviced.
  • Regularly check all fluid levels.
  • Check that all lights and windshield wipers are in working condition.
  • Ensure your tires are in good snow/ice driving condition.

Hot Weather Driving Tips:

  • Help prevent your vehicle from overheating by making sure your radiator is working properly and is filled with fluid.
  • Check all fluid levels regularly.
  • Ensure that all tires are properly inflated.
  • Check that your air-conditioning is in working order before heading out.
  • If you are traveling a long distance try to plan the trip for early in the morning or later in the evening when the weather is cooler.
  • NEVER leave children or pets unattended for any length of time in a vehicle.  A closed vehicle can reach temperatures over 100 degrees in a very short time period.
  • Always wear your seatbelt, drive the speed limit and stay alert.

Be prepared for unexpected emergencies.  Items to keep on hand in your emergency kit include:

  •  Flashlights with batteries
  • First Aid Kit
  • Blankets
  • Fix-a-Flat
  • Matches
  • Rain gear
  • Small shovel
  • Jumper cables
  • Bottled water
  • Canned fruits or veggies
  • Keep gas tank at least half full

Health Insurance Tips

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

These are just a few tips on helping you from making costly mistakes when it comes to health insurance.

* Always carry the name, telephone and fax numbers of your personal doctor.

* Always examine your health plan before leaving overseas and avoid making last minute decisions.

* Don’t authorize any major health services or tests such as CT scans on your own without permission from your insurance carrier.

* If you are planning to have children, make sure your current health plan covers maternity costs. Many plans don’t cover childbirth or only cover it after a 10 to 12 month moratorium. Other health plans will cover maternity as a pre-existing condition so that it either won’t be covered at all or only to a certain maximum. Childbirth expenses can be extremely high so don’t take a chance.

* Avoid changing insurance companies if you currently have a medical condition which is being treated or may reoccur. This is because your new plan may not cover that condition because of the pre-existing clauses in many health plans.

* Ask about the company’s emergency procedures. What happens if you become injured and need medical assistance immediately? Is their Assistance Center staffed 24 hours a day? How quickly and effectively will their medical staff react to your particular needs? If their 800 emergency number doesn’t operate from where you are, will they accept collect calls?
